Reality Store
The Reality Store is a Virginia Cooperative Extension-supported curriculum that is a financial simulation for youth middle school aged and higher. It allows students to learn more about career planning, money management, budgeting, and decision making. Students go through the process of choosing a career, receiving a “paycheck,” and learning to budget their pay to meet monthly expenses, along with unexpected expenses.
This simulation involves students receiving a hypothetical family situation with a monthly income. For example, “Lawyer, married, 3 children” Each student is then given enough money for one month’s worth of wages (before taxes) and asked to visit stations and make financial decisions based on their monthly income. These stations include firstly, taxes (station called Uncle Sam) and then move onto such spending stations as housing, transportation, entertainment, etc where they make critical decisions based on their income. The goal is for each student to visit each station without running out of money or going into debt.
In order for us to bring this quality program to our homeschooled students, we are seeking volunteers to manage one of the nearly 20 stations that students visit during the simulation. The VA Cooperative Extension and Chesapeake 4-H provides all the station information and training to help you fully understand the program and your responsibilities.
This event is FREE however, in order for your student to participate, a minmum of one parent needs to sign up and volunteer! This is one of those events where both parents are strongly encouraged to volunteer as it is an amazing opportunity to experience together with your teen.
